About Us

In response to the urgent need for such facilities in South Australia, Windamere Horse Haven was established, in 2013, as a not-for-profit rescue shelter for horses. It is located in the beautiful Adelaide Hills region.

Our aim is to save horses which are destined for the knackery or euthanasia but deserve a second chance at life. These include horses that have been abused, neglected, abandoned, and unwanted, yet may be rehabilitated and re-homed.

At Windamere, our team of devoted volunteers is guided by a set of ethical horsemanship principles. With help from supportive local vets, equine dentists, physiotherapists, and farriers, we conduct thorough health checks on our horses as required. We practice Natural Horsemanship. Finally, we do our best to find our horses their forever homes.

It is only when a horse has completed rehabilitation and training that we look for a suitable adoptive home for them. The adoption process involves seeing prospective owners interact with and, for ridden horses, ride their potential mount. We match the horse to the owner, not the other way around.

All our horses come with an adoption fee which is determined by the age, experience and ability of each horse as well as in relation to the prices of green horses advertised in classifieds. We offer a 4-week refund period to help new owners get to know their new horses and to ensure a correct match.
